HDMI to DVI

I have an older HD ready Sony xbr. It has a DVI port in the back (no HDMI). But my digital Cable box has an HDMI port in the back. I am currently using component cables to connect my Cablebox to my TV.

If I were to purchase a HDMI to DVI cable will I have a better picture or is it not worth it?

Thanks,

Sorry if repost, didn't really know what to search for.

hdmi is dvi+audio. you won't lose any video quality going from hdmi to dvi
whether or not it shows up better than component depends on various factors, but usually hdmi would be preferred.

I believe the above posters think you are going from using dvi to using hdmi. There is a significant difference between component and dvi/hdmi for high resolution pictures. monoprice.com for a cheap cable to do the job.

edit: I misread abuki's post... What he said is correct.

Well, to be fair, there is a signifigant difference between dvi and component....depending on your tv. If you have a digital television and can have 1:1 mapping, you will notice a difference if your set is large.

What type of set and what size do you have? It may be worth the small cost. (you dont need to go to best buy-find the cables and adapters on the internet and its WAY cheaper)

Yes, there will be a difference. Whether it's measurable/noticeable is another story. I have two DVI's on my tv (Pioneer Elite 630HD), I have an upconverting DVD player that I do HDMI->DVI on but for my cable box I just use component. That's mostly out of laziness before I got a Harmony remote to do all the switching and because HDMI->DVI converters can be a little expensive. It's been a year or so but I think I paid ~$75 for mine.

Just a clarification. He means HDMI to DVI Cable - there's no conversion involved.

You probably won't notice a difference. Although it should be cheap to get a cable and verify it for yourself.

It will look pretty much as good as regular HDMI, but you won't get sound. You'll have to get an optical sound cord or something like that.
