HDMI output not working for a Mac, works for a laptop

About a year ago a friend bought a Mac for use in his show bussiness. Together he got a cable to output video and audio to VGA and HDMI. So far, his DJ can only use the VGA output, and only audio HDMI (after changing a lot of things, so they dont know what enabled it). They tested the cable in a Mac laptop and it worked perfectly, without having to configure anything. Being a sort of "technical consultor" for him, he asked me to research whats happening. Can somebody suggest me where to look to fix this problem? Im not a Mac expert and I dont know where to start.

So just to make sure here, we're talking about some kind of Mini-DisplayPort kind of adapter? And you have a MDP-VGA and MDP-HDMI adapter, but only the MDP-VGA adapter actually works as expected? Is that the long and short of it?

cl-scott, yes, my friend has the adapter with vga and hdmi output. HAvent seen it myself, but Im planning to look at it at some time, when the Mac is working and everything is set.
slash, I dont know the exact model, Mac are really rare here and I havent seen that one working, always off. I think this is the 23 inches model.
