HDMI out on laptop won't work?

I picked up an MSI X340 laptop last week and have been using it without any issues with VGA out to a 58" Samsung PN58B540 screen. However, I wanted to hook up the laptop's audio to my receiver, so I hooked up the receiver to the TV via an optical cable, and then bought a new HDMI cable with the intention of hooking the laptop up via HDMI instead of VGI, so that the laptop would output the audio via HDMI as well, and the audio would pass to the receiver through the TV. First question: will this audio setup work? Second (the main one): HDMI out for video doesn't seem to work - the laptop recognizes the TV as being hooked up, the HDMI port in use lights up on the TV's menu, but when I actually select that HDMI port as the video source, it says no signal. I've tried using different HDMI ports on the TV (the laptop has only one), but the exact same thing happens. What's the issue here? Thanks!

try the video cut-over switch?

like fn-F6 or something.

(just a thought)

also, the audio-out might not work on your laptop's HDMI.

Thanks, I checked out the link but it just says to make sure HDMI is active and that you're using the right input - obvious stuff.

Before we dig deeper - will audio out via HDMI from the laptop work or not? Because if not, I'll just leave it hooked up via VGA - why waste time right? :)

I don't know if the audio will work for you or not. that'd be something in the specs on your laptop...

You can always run an audio patch cable from the laptop's green port to the receiver.

sometimes a driver update is needed to fix/add such feature. this just happened to my TM2 tablet. sound via HDMI does not work with any of the video drivers developed by HP, but it does work with the latest driver from ATI.

look for people who have hardware similar to yours and see if they've got HDMI audio. they might know a fix/tweak that addresses this problem. if this is a driver issue, you might have to wait months till the OEM or manufacturer get it done right.
