HDMI-HDMI works, but not Mini-DP to DP?

Hi guys,

With my Fury X video card, there are 3 display ports and 1 hdmi port.

I connect it to the Asus MG279Q monitor, which has 1 Mini DisplayPort, 1 DisplayPort, 2x Hdmi Port.

The Asus monitor comes with a Mini Display port to Displayport cable.

So I connect the displayport end of the cable into my Fury X's display port, and the mini displayport end of the cable into the Asus MG279Q port.

When I start the computer, the Bios will successfully post, ect ect, but then the boot process will never make it to the Windows 8.1 Login screen. I can enter the Bios and everything, and get past the Bios, but never enter the Login screen and subsequently the desktop when using the Mini DP to DP cable. A black screen just shows forever and forever.

Oddly enough, If i uninstall the drivers completely (and thus am affectively using the Microsoft Basic Display Adapter), then i am able to boot past the bios, past the windows login screen, and enter the desktop normally. But once I install the drivers(latest drivers according to the auto detect utility from amd's website), i get the same problem of never accessing the desktop.

However, I have no problems when using the HDMI cable to connect the monitor hdmi input to the fury x's hdmi output.

Any advice? Should I reinstall windows and everything?

Not sure if anyone has encountered a similar problem, maybe with another port..

Are you using these? http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/AMD-Radeon-300-Series.aspx

Is this windows 8.1 or something else?
Did windows detect the monitor correctly?
That said, go ahead and boot into the OS with HDMI connected, and log in normally.
Now, connect the display port cable, and on the monitor, tell it to use the DP for input.
Do you see the desktop then? Did windows make a 'connection' noise when you plugged in the DP cable to the monitor?
If all you get is a black screen, tell monitor to use HDMI input again, and the desktop should once again appear.
Now, open up CCC go to my digital flat panels, and see if the correct monitor info is listed.
If so, go to common display tasks, and put mouse over the 'detect display' option, and on monitor, tell it to use DP input, and now click it, and see if the monitor comes to life, or if it goes into power savings mode.

Huh? Not for Mini-DP to DP. There is never a need for an active adapter in that case, because it's the exact same protocol, just different connectors. All you need is a cable with a standard DP connector on one end and a Mini-DP connector on the other.

That said, there are a lot of bad cables out there, some shipped with monitors. If the original poster has another Mini-DP to DP cable, he might want to try that. If not, then this cable from Accell is said to be of good quality and isn't too expensive. The fact that it works on low resolutions (BIOS and using the emergency fallback display adapter) and not high resolutions tells me that the cable could be crap, and not able to pass adequate data rates.

Hey, the odd thing is that, the cable does work at high resolutions. If i take my macbook pro, and connect the Mini DP end of the cable into the macbook pro, and then DP end of the cable into the monitor, it totally works, displaying full 2560x1440 res.

It's just with the desktop that i am having the problem.

I haven't tried out Elixer's solution yet, it sounds good, but i will today.

I am having another cable ordered today regardless though, this time, a display port to display port cable.

Hey, so yeah, it is windows 8.1 I believe windows 8.1 does detect the monitor, because when i go to Common Display Tasks, the monitor info is listed correctly.

Anyways, putting my mouse over 'detect display', then using the monitor OSD to switch to DP, and then clicking my mouse left button (So that 'detect display' is clicked), does nothing....black screen and my monitor says "Mini Displayport input NO SIGNAL"

Anyhow, I tried to connect my late 2013 retina macbook pro using the same Mini DP to DP cable, and there's no signal being sent to the monitor anymore.

I dont have another monitor to test this cable out with. But this would imply that this cable is defective. My new cable is coming on Sunday and i hope it works then.

thanks for the help guys.
