HDMI-DVI cable or DVI-DVI cable plus HDMI-DVI adapter?

I have been all DVI up until now, but I'm buying an HDMI 2x1 switch (which I'm converting into a 1x2 splitter). I'll need 3 HDMI-DVI cables for this. I already have one such cable. I'm wondering if I should buy 2 new HDMI-DVI cables (15' and 3') or just buy a couple of HDMI-DVI adapters for the DVI-DVI cables I already have. Are those adapters trouble free?

I have a 2m (maybe 6') cheapie from monoprice HDMI cable connected by a converter at my computer's DVI port and there is no problem with that configuration. Longer runs, noisy environments, kinked / compressed cables may not pass a recoverable signal. Also, some monitors / routing devices are better than others with cable equalization.

At 5m you will probably not have any problems with adapters. Price difference may be a wash given shipping costs for monoprice cables. More expensive cables like DVIGear? Try the adapters first.

I also have had no problems with adapters. I used a dvi-hdmi adapater with 6" monoprice hdmi cable and a 25' and had no issues. Didnt notice a difference going to a dvi-hdmi cable either other than it was a bit more convenient.

Yup. I decided to order one adapter to try on my 15 foot DVI cable because to replace that cable would take at least an hour's work, probably two -- it's behind a giant bookcase. I'd have to take all the books off, remove the bookcase (which is bolted to the wall, this being earthquake country), replace the cable with a 15' HDMI-DVI cable, replace bookcase, books. I decided to buy that HDMI-DVI cable anyway, just in case, it was $5.70 at Monoprice. I have reason to believe the 15' DVI cable has a serious problem but I'll try it with the adapter and see if it works, could save me a lot of work.

Also bought a 3' HDMI-DVI cable, like you say it's almost a wash between that cable and the adapter, so what the hey.

In the bookcase is my projector which seems to be pretty finicky. Got my fingers crossed, but I'm prepared and shouldn't need to make another order. Won't ship until Monday, but "overnight" from Rancho Cucamonga is not only the cheapest Monoprice shipping option, it appears to be the fastest, kinda weird.

I got the $15.70 manual HDMI-DVI adapter and a few likewise cables and made the modification (reversing the two diodes). Works fine. Wish I'd known about this a month ago. Man, the trouble that would have saved me!

HDMI and DVI are equivalent with all the same pins, just different packaging, and the converters are passive, i.e. no powered circuits, just rewiring the pins. So they aren't troublesome to make as there's little place to f*ck up.
