HDMI and DVI

I have an LG upconversion DVD player with a HDMI out. I recently bought the Olevia LT26HVX that only has DVI no HDMI.

My question is...

Is it better to buy HDMI --> DVI cable or HDMI --> DVI adapter along with DVI to DVI cable?

Would there be a perfomance loss if I have an adapter connected to the DVI cable?

also

what's the difference between DVI-I and DVI-D?

Thanks for the Help!

DVI and HDMI are 100% compatible and equal in quality etc... its a digital signal sending 1's and 0's. The only disadvantage to DVI is that it does not carry audio, thus requiring a SPDIF cable for digital audio.

The other consideration is HDCP copy protection. It can be found on many DVI ports and almost all HDMI ports. Whichever you use, DVI or HDMI, you want an HDCP compatible plug for HD DVD and blue ray, and possibly some cable set top boxes.

It's digital, and it's the same signal format. HDMI just carries audio too, and (optionally) supports content encryption ("HDCP").

The receiving end must support HDCP, this is not something in the cable, plug or converter.

DVI-I outputs have an analog copy of the DVI signal on extra pins, so you can interface to an analog (VGA) display.

Depends which one you're outputting to/from. Usually you want DVI-D gear. DVI-I stuff is DVI-D and VGA combined in one output; if you are converting to/from HDMI, the VGA portion is going to be ignored anyway.

You can use HDCP over DVI (or any digital connection, like Firewire). Anything that has an HDMI input is supposed to support HDCP, but there are some devices (mostly PC monitors and very early HDTVs) that support DVI but do not support HDCP.

There is no analog signal on HDMI, so obviously the output will only be digital.

I believe hdmi isnt 100% digital, not sure where i read this but for the hdcp protection to work the digital signal has to be changed to rbg analog and then back to digital.
Now if theres no hdcp protection it might not need to be changed to analog.
