I like HD-DVD in this fight but the way things are going it might be "none of the above." The reason? Joe Sixpack. See... Joe can walk into his local Wal-Mart and see an HD-DVD player in action. And for $500, well, that's kind of spendy. And sitting right next to it is a $79 Samsung model that also puts out HD! (Nevermind the fact that it's using a cheap upconverter and won't play the new discs)

"Well glory be, Sally May, this one does the same thing for $400 less!"

If that doesn't seal the deal a quick question directed at the clerk sure will.

Joe: "Hey there, how come this one cost so damn much when this one here does the same thing?"

Clerk: "Good question."

The sad truth is that in the average comsumer's brain digital = HD. And since we all know that DVD players are digital, they must be HD, right? And heck, most of them say they are HD and they're way cheaper that the new machines.

After the initial clamor of the original release, I haven't had one customer ask about HD players and I haven't had one phone call about them. I don't think the new formats are doomed to the same fate as SACD or DVD-Audio, but they are not being accepted at the rate we thought they would.

Seriously, the Blu-Ray release have been pretty sucky recently. I know these studios have better movies than this.
