HDD's

My current HDD is a 80Gig WD, it is really starting to annoy me now cause it keeps making a beeping noise everytime I play games(if somebody can tell me what that is I'd really appreciate it). So now I want to buy a new HDD.
My options for manufacturers are:

Western Digital,
Maxtor,
Samsung,
Seagate.

Which is the best make in your experience, you don't have to add why but it would be nice.
FYI, sometimes while I am playing games my pc freezes, when I reset it my HDD makes one looooooooooooong BEEEEEEEEEEEP. What is that???

Seagates have the best reliability record right now. 5 year warranty is the best out there and their desktop drives are wisper quiet.

phenom, beeping noises from a hard drive are peculiar. Typically beeping comes from the pc's built in speaker.

Re hard drives, I've been buying Samsungs for the past 18 months, and have had good luck w/ them. They are virtually silent. Started out w/ the single platter 40g drives, and then moved up to the multi platter 160GB 8MB cache drives. Good performance and three year warranty.

I'm a great fan of WD, never had one fail on me and they always score well at sr.com . At work we see alot of Seagates. Unless you're buying SCSI I'd stay away from Maxtor. And this is just a personal opinion (well all of this is) but Samsung isn't a name I'd look for in a HD (maybe other electronics but not HDs ... I guess I have a mind block or something).

Jeff, the noise is definately not from the pc speaker, I checked that out. It is definately from the HD(i hope i am spelling "definately" right, ermmm.) It sounds more like a screeching tick tick tick noise, that really grates my nuts. This only occurs when I am playing games or watching a dvd or something. Well if you can help me with that i'd really appreciate it cause then I won't have to buy a new HD.

Well WD though the Noisiest are IMO the best in terms of everything else.

THen Seagate offers near that performance but are MUCH quieter. (Fluid Bearings 🙂 )

Have you checked the SMART status of the drive? You should be able to enable SMART checking at boot and/or user a utility like SpeedFan to check it. It definately also wouldn't hurt to run the manufacturer's diagnostics utility on it (maybe you can RMA instead of purchasing a new one).

I vote Seagate, their performance is good (albeit not the absolute best but good) and they are very reliable, and very quiet.

and a 5 year warranty puts the cherry on top 😉

Ek het so n voëltjie gehoor vluit laat jy dalk na jou cpu temperatuur moet gaan kyk jong. Ek dink dit kan dalk die probleem wees. Noem my maar n genie, dis ouraait. Ekt so n spesmaas jy het te veel geld ook, so koop jy maar n nuwe hd en dan gee jy vir my jou oue.
