Hdds incorrectly detected by system?!?

Can someone explain to me why using an Abit BE6II motherboard using the latest bios upgrade, Windows 2000 sp1, the latest HTP 366 hdd controler driver. My system incorrectly detects aMaxtor 40gig drive as a 31 gig drive... Thanks.

I believe that your problem is with the # of cylinders on the drive. INT13 BIOS extensions added 4 more bits to the cylinder, head and sector addresing scheme. This allows for theoretical addressing of 128gig. Some new drives use lots of cylinders and very few heads, which can cause troubles for some BIOS's limiting the drive to 32gigs. Some drives also have a jumper to force support to only 32gigs, its normally called Limited Cylinder Mode, check it out. Also some drives allow a remapping of the physical heads to more logical heads, with less cylinders, to get around this problem.
