Im looking for a good fast quiet SATA HDD. No brand preference. I looked at AT review on HDD and anything is much better than what i have. I am looking a SATA only, and i only wnat to spend around 100$. give or take a couple bucks.

Look here.

As with most things, there's no easy answer. Some of the Samsung SATAs are very quiet, some come with noisy motors. Safer bet is hitachi, but some of their drives "meow." So look around on SPCR. DO NOT cross post this to SPCR. There is plenty of info there if you search. I WILL chew you out if you crosspost this to SPCR. Use the search function there.

i snagged myself a 120GB seagate sata drive about a year ago

i never have had problems with it, and it doesn't "whine" like some drives do

newegg invoice lists this model # ST3120026AS

I was just about to ask that... anyone have the Seagate drive.

Here is the link for it at newegg.

Can anyone tell me how loud it is. Also how faast it is.

I will look at the hitachi and them... but are they fast SATA drives with 8mb of cache.

So doyou think this is a good buy or is there something else better.

Also do you have the SATA version because i have heard of differences between the PATA and the SATA versions (noise).

Yes, the SATA is noisier. If you read the link, you'd see that a new version of the Seagate will be coming soon, so a lot of us SPCR types are holding off on purchases.

Ok now i ask this do you have any clue as to how much the new Seagate will cost, and how much quieter it will be.

Im desperately wondering!! Someone.

I am torn between 3 things.

The Segate PATA 120gb Barracuda (7200.7)

The SATA 120gb Barracuda (7200.7)

And waiting and hoping the the 7200.8 is quieter and faster

At any rate will i hear any of these drives with 4 panaflo L1A's running. And will it be noticeably faster than my current drive.

I briefly had that Samsung hard drive. Although their PATA drives with Nidec FDB are THE most quiet drive you'll hear outside of 2.5", this particular model has the JVC FDB which produce almost Maxtor level whine. I have a 7200.7 and I find it less "whiny", but more "noisy" under seek. I'd wait and see what 7200.8 holds. Quiet computing is catching on and I expect Seagate to be trying to take over that segment with Samsung being so inconsistent.

Yes i would like to wait for the 7200.8 but then cost becomes a facotr. I dont want to spend muhc over 100$. Probably 110$ max.

What about the Hitachi HDD? How does that stack up?

Also should i just play it safe and get the PATA version of the Seagate which has been proven to be whisper quiet.

This has been covered multiple times over at silentpcreview...just go search there and you'll get your answers. That's the best site on the net for discussing/learning about quiet computing.
