HDD woes - old maxtor drive

I've got an old Maxtor drive (80gb) from 2003.

as far as I can tell it's working but it's only showing me 7.9gb of space.

I've filled the thing with zeroes and all i get with partition magic is a 7.9gb unformatted chunk.

is this thing caput? or is there something else i can do?

Load defaults in bios. Try another tool like the free one from Maxtor. Go to their support site for downloads.

If you'd seen as many failed Maxtor 80 GB drives as I have, you'd put it in the trash and buy a new drive. Current Maxtors use Seagate internals, so they should be safe.

Yes, hard drives these days are so cheap it's not worth fussing over the drive. Not to mention the age of the drive. Drives are not meant to last forever, that's for sure.
