HDD total amount of written data

Is there a way to check the total amount of data that has been written to a hard drive?

If you are lucky you'll find it easily in the SMART values. Not all HDDs will have an easy to read value for it. I would start by check the drive manufacturer if they have diagnosis utilities. You can use other utilities to read SMART values, but not all values are 'easy to read.' You often need a decoder ring that comes in the help file or manual that some the manufacturer's diagnosis utilities come with.

I have never seen SMART values for reads / writes from any maker, so I really doubt they keep that information in the SMART table.

Maybe on SCSI, or something along those lines...

CrystalDiskInfo (free) does show all available SMART data.

That is why I said, the higher end devices that use SCSI (or ...) typically have more smarts that can keep track of data written, but that is done by the controller.
