HDD storage discrepencies.

So my computer is reporting that my first partition has 15 GBs used and 4.5ish free when I check properties on "C:"

However, when I select all files/folders in my root C (including hidden and system files, like my pagefile etc.), and check properties I only get 9.5 GB total. I'm sure the difference lies in some sort of calculating method or something, I'm just curious as to what it is, and why I can get a different of 5 GBs when I check both ways .. IE what's the 5 GBs reported as used when I check properties on C that's not there when I select all in my root C?

that 5GB must be in a folder that your user account does not have access to view. if it's xp then its probably the folder that contains all the system restore points, the size of a folder that a user doesnt have permissions to is 0 bytes, since the user account cant calculate how much data if any is in it. "private folders" will show as 0KB as well to the user that does not have permissions to it. if your an admin, you can add the admin account to the permissions dealing with ownership to those folders such as "System Volume Information" which is the one that can get really huge since it contains all of the restore points in xp.

I see, but any reference linkage since five gigabyte is a quite huge for restore point system files! 😀

its xp right? to delete the system restore points, goto the properties for mycomputer, under the system restore tab, you can turn off system restore (apply it), (deletes the files) then turn it back on and apply. 5GB of restore points is possible.

Absolutely was system restore. I thought I had turned it off, but obviously not. w00t. my 5 gigs have returned from the nether! Thanks!

Glad you found the solution.

On desktop PCs, common causes of missing hard drive space include:

1) OS Restore partitions, created by the PC manufacturer
2) Windows System Restore files
3) Utilities like Norton Systemworks, with their "File Protection" systems that keep hidden copies of deleted items

i make a habit of never using the norton system works since they just slow computers down and there isnt a benifit i see since backups are better.
windows system restore i keep on though, but i turn it off/on every few months just to gain back my space, dont know why i just move the slider to set it to a smaller size like a gig though.
os restore partitions, thats a big one, they dont give you a media to install usually, but when the hd is dead, they then will send you one to install.
