HDD still active on bootup after SSD installation

I've recently added an SSD to my desktop (win 7 64 bit) and transferred my OS partition and one other over to it, I planned on removing the old OS partition on the HDD and expanding the remaining.

When I boot up however, from halfway through the Win logo and up to the password screen I'm hearing a lot of HDD noise and am a bit worried about deleting the old partition in case something is still loading from it.

I've enabled AHCI and optimised the OS for SSD use, is the HDD activity normal? can i delete the partition safely?

The easiest way to ensure that the data transfer was done properly is to disconnect the HDD (just unplug the SATA or power cable) and see if the system boots with only the SSD installed.
