HDD & SSD Configuration

I've got another newbie question.
Is there a advantage/disadvantage to how you configure your storage with the Z-68 chipset? I realize using the SSD as a boot drive is faster, but where would it be advantageous to load OS (and everything else for that matter) on HDD and let intel SRT do its cache vs. loading OS on SSD and storing files/folders (music, movies, pics) on HDD. I'm asking because I'm building a system for home use with a 128gb SSD and a 1tb HDD. What practical applications would suggest you use one way over the other?
Thanks
Dave

Well, first of all, you can use only 60GB cache drive max with Intel's SRT. So if you were to use that drive as a cache drive, half of it would be wasted, unless you were to split it as cache and OS drive.

So I say, use it fully as an OS drive, and skip the cache aspect of it.

Or, buy another smaller SSD to use as a cache drive for the HD.

Thanks Larry! So is it possible to migrate the windows storage to the HDD? You would move the entire C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents to the HDD, not just the desktop icon?
Thanks
Dave

Yeah, it's very easy to move all user files to another drive. Just, in Windows, literally MOVE (don't copy and delete) all the folders INSIDE your user directory (you can't move the actual username directory, but you can move everything in it), to the new drive location. It'll move the data and update all the OS pointers to those locations, so the OS will know where the new My Documents folder is, the new Downloads folder, etc...

I have my 128GB SSD with OS and right now, all programs (though eventually, I'll run less critical programs off one of my HDDs), with my user file and its 50GB of data on one of my HDDs.

I used the following instructions for setup:

http://www.overclock.net/t/1156654/seans-windows-7-install-optimization-guide-for-ssds-hdds

The guy who wrote it takes into account windows settings that do not make sense with an SSD OS drive.

Also, see this for how to move users off of the SSD:
http://www.overclock.net/t/664738/how-to-setup-ssd-boot-drive-with-secondary-hard-disc-optimization

This second guide ensures that all users are created on your desired target (via registry settings). Basically, in the first guide, when it tells you to change the user directory, start using the second guide.

I just set up a new device using those instructions.
Ultimately my storage solution will be
SSD1-OS/Boot, Programs
SSD2-partitioned for
1)User Data, Browser cache, pagefile
2)SRT
HD - media, SSD backups

There's no reason to do a registry hack for the users move...just move the files and folders in Windows....all associated registry changes will be made automatically.
