hdd spins up and down -- works ok == rma?

If a drive seems to spin up and down.. (hum goes up in pitch and then down and up again occasionally-- never comes to complete halt), does this qualify for an RMA? Wasn't doing this before.

This is a 40 gig IBM IDE that seems to be working fine others, the Drive Fitness Test tested everything ok.

Almost sounds like spin down settings either in your bios or windows is set at a low time. Or maybe I just don't understand what you are talking about. But those two things I would check on first. The settings have changed on me before and I didn't even know it.

It doesn't actually stop spinning, it just starts spinning at a lower rate for some period of time and then starts spinning faster. It's *as if* it was failing, but the only thing wrong is that it sometimes spins more slowly than at other times (& there aren't any write/read errors).

But that said, I will have to check that out too.
