HDD "skip" problem

Ok, I'm having a bit of trouble here. My HDD has been "skipping." Let me explain. If I'm playing Counter-Strike (only multi-player game I play) or downloading or even sometimes surfing the web, my computer will lag. Lag is normal, but for my music to skip as well is just strange. Also, when I'm playing CS, my ping is fine, but randomly my loss jumps to 30+. This has never happened before, and it even happens at 3-4AM when nobody is awake (I live on campus). I just replaced the IDE cable, but it's still doing it. What else could cause this problem? Faulty RAM? Video Card? Ethernet cable? I have two ethernet jacks, and they both do the same thing, so I guess it's not the slot. The computer is relatively fine when I'm not doing anything. The other night I was downloading at about 150KB/s, and it was doing it. I was just on a web page and it did it. I am getting annoyed. Any ideas?

The only time that I have experienced this is when I put a high load on the comp and it is predictible. For instance, playing music and burning a dvd is a no go. Same with any big program and WoW.

What programs do you run constantly or in the background?

Also, I always listen to music while I play CS. I'm not doing anything that I normally don't do, which is why I'm confused.

AhHA, using Symantec CE AV, right? By default, it will schedule auto scans at 3AM. Change your schedule.

Indeed I am, but I have no scheduled scans. Is it possible that it could be the internet connection? If, let's say, the internet here was faultering and losing signal then regaining it almost instantaneously, would this cause my entire computer to lag? I'm going to ask around to see if others are experience spikes, but I don't think it's that likely. There has to be some logical explanation, this just won't go away. Grr.
