HDD Sata hotswap bay question

For those that have one of these in your system, I'm just wondering, does the drive get really hot? I'm looking to buy something like THIS and stick it up into one of the 5.25 bays in my case to do weekly storage backups and clone my OS drive periodically, this will be really convenient if it works I just don't want to kill my backup drives. The thought popped in my head that internal HDD's usually sit behind a big intake fan in most cases and this won't, am I just being paranoid?

I use the KF-1000 hot swap bays in both of my PC's...
Never a problem! :thumbsup::laugh:
The KF-1000 is better than the type that have an enclosed try for the HD.

I have one of those racks installed in the lowest 5.25" bay in my case, so any drive sitting in the rack at least gets a bit of air from the front intake fan. I have also positioned the rack higher up, and in either position, drives did not heat up more than 10-15C above ambient (case) temps even after a few hours of use (these were 2-3 platter 7200RPM drives).

If you plan to install the rack in a very restricted space (i.e. sandwiched between two optical drives), heat might become an issue with prolonged use. Even in a worst-case scenario as this, for periodic backups where you will be keeping the drive powered up for only hours at a time, heat should not be a concern.

Do make sure that whatever SATA port you use supports/is properly configured for hot-swapping (assuming you plan to hot-swap HDDs).

I actually use that rack (bought at local shop when I needed one ASAP) and it works fairly well. Another option is the Vantec Tray unit which is really good, however I'm a huge trayless fan now.

Just ensure that everything is screwed in tightly as the cage can rattle if the door is open.

Ok, I only have 1 optical drive so this should be fine I guess.

I can live without hotswap but I'll do my best to get it working, I want to set up my OS drive for dual boot with Vista and XP, I've read about it a little so far and it seems Vista is pretty straightforward but XP is might be more tricky but I'll see about it when I get there.

Thanks guys.

The KF-1000 is a great hot swap bay if your MB supports "hot swap".
Even if it doesn't, a cheapie PCI RAID card will do it for you.
