Feel like a bit of a moron, sometimes you know about rather complicated computer things, (I just built a system, etc) but then other simpler things you just don't know.
I just found out -- which blew my mind a bit I'm embarrassed to admit -- that there's nothing wrong with using 5400rpm hdds to store and playback music and video even uncompressed wav, or 1080p 5.1 video files as long as it's one stream at a time. Is that entirely true?
So, questions...
1. Games - playable no problem on 5400rpm drives? (Offline only)
2. Editing video and audio and photo edit work? Is that kind of use fine on a 5400rpm drive?

Thanks!

I have Crystal Disk Mark, forgot about it. Of course, I would need a 5400 drive to test.

What you mean is that a HDD's data transfer rate will never go faster than what USB3.0 permits, right?

Just buy a 14tb external hdd and call it a day.

Yes, single hdd cannot saturate USB 3.0, which is 5gpbs symmetrical.

Here is something to lol at

Wow...ok so I guess you recommend Western Digital. Any particular ones you lean towards?
Don't think they are all that different. Mybook is encrypted while element is not. Easystore seems to be a BB exclusive. The 14TB in the pix is a easystore that were on sale for 200 from BB in Dec.

My oldest 3TB mybook is from 2013 according to my mailbox.

of course your scratch disk and programs will be on nvme, but its insane to think you can keep all your data on nvme unless you are a millionaire or dont use your computer for work or do anything worth capturing in life. i would not buy one 14tb i would buy 2 and just copy my data to both drives jbod style, im very lazy and simple however but i have seen drives fail while rebuilding a array (SUper annoying)

i usually shoot at 1gb per 80 seconds of video (4k60fps) and i think i shot around 2 hours in the past 3 days of different videos. wish i could afford 10tb ssd drives but really isnt realistic until 2025? so for now i will keep purchasing 8tb 10tb and 12tb drives. what ever is the sweet spot per $/tb at the time. hgst was my fav but now only choice is wd ;'(
