Well, the mobo on my old desktop got fried over the weekend so I ordered components to build an entirely new machine, including a new HDD. My intention/hope is to install XP on the new HDD and use it as the primary one in the new PC. I need to recover some files off the old HDD and then was hoping to reformat that and using it in as the drive in another PC (complete with new install of XP). The new HDD is a SATA drive; the old HDD is IDE. Any suggestions/advice on how to accomplish this? If any more info or clarification is needed please let me know. Help is appreciated!

Everything should be very straight forward. Just plug your old ide drive into the IDE port on the motherboard and you are good to go. Make sure that you set to boot to your new SATA drive in the BIOS.

And, you can also put the old HDD into an external USB 2 case and use it for archival data storage. And as cprince points out, just make sure you have the correct boot sequence set in BIOS so the new SATA drive comes right behind your optical drive.
