1. How much faster is regular single SATA compared to an ATA133 HDD in practice?

2. How much faster is Raid 0 configuration compared to an ATA 133 HDD in practice?

3. How much faster is the Raptor drives compared to an ATA 133 HDD in practice?

I was using a RAID 0 (later migrated to a JBOD array) with 4 Western Digital 200GB 8mb cache SE HDDs on a Promise SX6000 RAID controller with 128mb cache installed. Using Pinnacle Studio 9 software (I do a lot of home movies), I was getting about 28mb/s read, and 27mb/s write.
I just got a $12 PCI SATA RAID 0 card for use until I can get my BroadCom BC4852 RAID controller, with two Hitachi 250gb SATA hard drives configured in a RAID 0 array, I'm getting 115mb/s read, and 86mb/s write.
That is my experience with them... So I'm sticking with SATA, and Hitachis. And on the 15th of June, I get the BC4852 card. So I'll be posting about that when I can.

According to HD Tach:

1) There's a slight difference in performance between SATA and PATA HDD, for example, the Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (a 120GB ATA drive) has an average transfer rate of 37.5MB/s, random access time of 17.1ms, and burst speed of 78MB/s, whereas the Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (a 120GB SATA drive) has an average transfer rate of 46.2MB/s, random access time of 12.5ms, and burst speed of 98.5MB/s.

2) As a comparison, my Raptor74 has an average transfer rate of 65.1MB/s, random access time of 7.6ms, and burst rate of 127.5MB/s, whereas 2 X Raptor74 in RAID0 configuration has an average transfer rate of 129.5MB/s, random access time of 8.2ms, and burst rate of 175.5MB/s.

3) The Maxtor MaXLine Plus II (the fastest ATA133 drive in HD Tach library), has an average transfer rate of 50.0MB/s, access time of 13.6ms, and burst rate of 115.9MB/s.
