Looking to buy this used, seller told me it is an IBM 40GB 7200RPM & serial # ic35l040aver07-0 only. From googling, I've determined its an IBM Desktar 60GXP 7200RPM 40GB. Its a great price and should fit my needs perfectly, but I remember hearing about the infamous "Deathstar" drives. He says its about 3-4 years old and was in use up until a few months ago, so I'd imagine it would have died already if that were the case. Any warnings before I purchase? Looking to buy in next 12-24 hours, thanks!

deathstar drives were of the 75GXP series. the 60 GXP was the generation that came after the 75gxp, and in general were a far better drive. i would say somewhat normal reliability.

I have one of these drives in a system, no problems since; I got it when it first came out. Storagereview.com never had anything bad to say as I recall that drive was an IDE performance leader for awhile.

they have a firmware update for the troubled drives on ibm's website....google it and you'll find it.
