i installed a 7200 rpm drive in my laptop, i do alot of video conversion. from .mts to .wmv.

i previously had a 5400 rpm drive in there. it seems like the 7200 is not running as fast. or maybe as fast as id like.

i had the 5400 in an external enclosure and i did the same conversion. and it took the same amount of time.

i know of everrest. but the program told me it had a max of 80mb/sec which i thought was a little low for a sata drive, i used the trial.

id like to run a test to see how fast the drive runs. possibly in RPM's, i dont know much more than that.

the 5400 RPM drive has 8mb cache, and the 7200 rpm has 16mb.

alright HDtune gave me a max of 88mb/s

this is the drive btw http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16822148336
Seagate Momentus 7200.3 ST9320421AS

HDtach gave me about 75 mb/s

at 17ms response time

the old harddrive was a hitachi 5400 rpm HTS542512K9SA00

tested it while in the enclosure
hdtune said max of 32 mb/s
hdtach said average 31mb/s
with the response time at 18ms

So i guess its just the files im converting that just seem to take longer..i dunno heh
they both have similar access time, i guess thats good heh :)

thnx again for the help, probaly doesnt help that im converting on a crap laptop hah

the hard drive speed has nothing to do with encoding speed. its dependent on your cpu.

yeah i thought of that after i ran the tests. crap laptop, was my realization.

but i wasnt testing the cpu.. i was testing the HDD.. it was the same laptop when using both HDD's. so i know relatively how fast the old drive went. i was comparing the new drive to kind of ease my mind that it is indeed a faster drive
