I have a laptop HD that was working fine until a few days ago. The laptop was thrown and stepped on and now the HD can't be read by any source. I bought an external to USB adapter and other 2.5" drives are seen but this one just spins and clicks.
It is a Hitchi HD, if i take out the physical hard disks and place them in a Toshiba branded 2.5" drive, could it work? or do i have to buy the same identical Hitchi HD and place them in there?

once open, a hard drive is pretty much dead to the world. Unless you do so in a clean room.

And you mean to say that "Her" laptop that the crazy ex destroyed the other night was actually yours?!?!

I'm not one to laugh at anothers misfortune (stupidity)....hell, yes I am....

i have done it before, i have opened HD's before and they still ran, of course i never opened a new and perfectly working HD before whyw ould i lol. i have also swapped platters before from identical drive to identical drive and it worked though it had a lot of bad sectors so many parts were not able to be read

and no the HD is not mine lol. It is from her laptop yes, she gave it to me to sell for parts, the laptop itself works but i tore off the screen and the HD is dead aswell. I dunno if i should sell the cpu, cdrom, etc or sell it all with the mobo and battery and someone can rig up a flat PC with a new HD and an external monitor lol
i am just trying to backup her HD if i can

I see (on the ownership thing). Sorry for laughing at you. What model is the laptop and the hard drive? I might have a spare hdd of the same model.

As far as I knew it would not work since the platters are not just set in randomly... I was always told they have to be lined up perfectly (by the manufacturer) for the head to know where to start reading.... but I could be misinformed

... usually after you open one up its dead to the world anyways.

yeah dude, you might have better luck sending the drive to a data recovery center. i'm sure someone local can do this for a reasonable price...

$250 is obscenely cheap for data recovery.
