HDD partitioning ? How to.

I have a 40gig HDD with a single partition and running Win2000pro. I want to partition the HDD into 3-4 partitions and wonder how to do it without data loss. I noticed that you can format the HDD via the right click while in Win explorer. Will that work only on hte empty space on the HDD ?
