HDD partitioning for an audio PC

8bit

Member
I use my PC for audio recording and sequencing. I have two 20GB 7200 ATA66 hard drives currently with Winme and programs on one drive (C🙂 and audio files on the other (D🙂

Just curious, will I see any improvement in the audio streaming if I partition it like this:

Physical drive 1 (20GB)
Partition 1 10GB - Windows
Partition 2 10GB - Programs

Physical drive 2 (20GB)
Audio files

I'm open to other suggestions. TIA

8bit, i'm just starting to study this stuff.
you may want to visit prorec.com.
read the articles like "roll your own thunderbird" and "windows 2000 hard disk optimization", among other great stuff. good site.

The most important thing is to make sure your audio partition is using the largest block sizes possible. prorec shows in detail how to do this. something like fat32 z:/64 ....i haven't done it yet coz i'm still running a heap of garbage that's embarassing to talk about. 🙂 but within the next week i will have amassed the components for my new audio beast. merry christmas to me. 🙂

Hi Jon,
Thanks for the link. I actually found the site after posting this topic. Very helpful site. I especially like the Win2k optimization for audio. I've found that having audio apps and audio files on the same physical drive improves audio streaming.

rrrreallly....that goes against traditional advice....
do you have any idea why using the SAME disk HELPS? thats really weird.

now you would still run audio in a separate partition right?

Here's what I've got running...

Physical drive 1
C: partition - Windows 98SE (98lite version) and audio apps
E: partition - audio files only

Physical drive 2
D: - Backups and misc files

Works well so far. But you have to try 98lite. Check it out at www.98lite.net
