The physical connection is irrelevant. Mac's primarily use the HFS+ filesystem which Windows can't read, so if you want to transfer a drive from one to the other it must be formatted. Unless you pay for software to read it, although I can't remember the name of that right now. Windows primarily uses NTFS which Mac can read, but can't write to without jumping through some hoops.
