hdd making high pitch whining noise...

got a 60gig western digital (5400rpm) that's started to make this high pitch whining noise a week ago. at first i thought it was a fan, until finally it got really annoying so i turned off fans one by one to only discover it was the hdd.

anyhow 2 questions:

1) is this a sign of impending failure?

2) how is western digital warranty for something like this? would they switch me for another drive? i wanna get rid of the hdd for the noise alone.

download the WD disk diagnostics and test the drive. High pitch whines are a sign the bearings are going. Disk diagnostics might not pick that up.

As above stated, download and test as they want to know this was done before any rma but first.................backup any data or ghost the drive if you have another or burn it to disk or another drive.

no errors found. but i still want to rma it cuz of noise & possible impending failure. but will western digital rma for noise alone?

i ask here becuase i'll probably advance rma it to make transferring data easier, but i don't want them to charge me for the drive, should they say nothing is wrong
