Every now and then my HDD will make a noise. Its not the normal crunching noise. While its doing stuff I can hear a weird noise that sounds like a beep but not the beep you get from your PC while posting. Also its not very loud. Its a newer 80gb,8mb cache,7200,ect. Any ideas?

Just happens every now and then. Its not constant.

yeah forgot to mention that. Its a Maxtor. Its doing it more often. Its not the clunk of death unless these newer drives sound different.

Without hearing it can't say for sure. It could be re-zeroing in an attempt to realign the heads back to track 0, a known starting point. If that is what it is, you need to be looking for a replacement soon :clock:

If I have to send another Maxtor in I will be pissed. I have RMA'ed several maxtors in the past year or so. When I call them Monday if they mention me sending it in I will not be happy with them.

I ran powermax through the 90sec and full test and it passed also did 2 burn in passes with no problems.

I've heard hard drives do many funky things, one of which is make a beeping sound. The last time I heard that was on my ibm 75gxp and it took a nice dump shortly after. If it doesnt sound normal with a hard drive, chances are it can only be a bad thing. My opinion is back up your data and RMA the drive with the manufacturer ASAP.

I agree with the back up your data advice. I had one drive that used the voice coil to make a beep when it had an error. It died not too long thereafter. Can't say if that's what you're hearing, but I'd be leary of that drive.

If that drive is SMART capable, do you have SMART turned on in your motherboard BIOS (assuming it's capable)? If so, what's it saying?

Actually, I think I've noticed a similar sound coming from my 120gb Maxtor (2mb cache, 7200rpm). It's very infrequent and slight in nature. It's used basically as a backup drive, and I backup religiously to DVD and my USB HD, so I'm not too worried about data loss.

I don't understant though because it only done it while I was downloading a big file. When I did a burn in with powermax it didnt do it at all.

I think I know what the noise was. You know when you first turn your system on the noise the HDD makes once it spins up? It does similar to that minus the spinup part.

Could where my mobo has leaking caps have been causing it? I am getting a new mobo about Wensday.
