HDD led on case constantly on, even after drastic mobo upgrade and case change....what's wrong?

Hey guys. I figured this would fall under General Hardware, so here goes. About two years ago, I upgraded my computer system to an Athlon 800 with an ABIT KT7-RAID mobo. I also picked up another case too. After hooking everything together, I noticed the HDD led which shows the hard drive activity stayed on after a couple of reboots. I didn't mind it too much, so I just let it go. No big deal. Well, every once in a blue moon (and I mean only 3 or 4 times since 2 years ago), the led would start working like it was supposed to until I would reboot. Well, about 4 months ago, I upgraded to a Antec case (SX-1040 I think?). I put the same KT7 mobo in it, and still got the constant HDD led. I figured it was the motherboard.

Well, 3 days ago, I got in my new mobo, RAM, and processor. The motherboard I got was the SOYO KT333 DRAGON Ultra Platinum Edition. I am loving this motherboard! Anyway, I put this mobo in the Antec case, and the HDD light is still staying constant!! How come it is still doing this after all this hardware change?? I'm sure it's probaly a simple answer, like VIA chipsets do this, or I have the connector on backwards. But I figure since every now and then it will work right till I reboot, it's gotta be on there correctly, right?

Thanks for any help you can give.

I would say that you probably have the connector for the HDD light conected backwards to the motherboard. Try switching its direction. If the does not work i would say you hard drive is a fault.

One of the most common assembly mistakes there is, and one I do quite frequently myself. The connector for the HDD Activity Light is attached to the mobo backwards. Just flip it 180 and all will be fine. 🙂

Weird, when I have my HDD indicator light connector on backwards the light doesn't light at all. 😕

Maybe the lead for the HDD LED is just bad. I never even bother hooking mine up anymore, so I haven't had an LED for my HD for about 4 years!

I've also noticed that under different OSes my HDD light seems to do different stuff.

Same exact setup under win98se and the light works just fine, under XP its always on....might be something like that? If you restart w/a boot disk, is the light still on?

Sorry to disappoint, but I flipped it 180 like you suggested, now it doesn't come on at all. I just find it weird having gone through two different cases and two different motherboards and still having the same problem.

It's probably the hard drive is not reporting it's access anymore, I forget which pins send the signal back down the cable.

Yep. If you've replaced the mobo and the case, switched the cable around and got nothing, it's probably a problem with you HDD.
