I think I have an ATA33 HDD from Quantum. It was packaged with my Compaq so I don't have the specs. In the Bios it shows that it's a 33 and I can't set it any higher. I recently purchased a WD40GB/ATA33/66/100. That's what it says on the box, so naturally I set it at ATA100 from it's setup disk.

Ever since I added my new WD HDD the boot up is excrusiating slow (win2k) and I suspect ti's because I have alot of mp3s on my new WD Haddrive. When you boot up, does Windows run a check on both HDD inspecting every nook and crany ? because it's very slow as I stated. I also have 256pc100/ram.

any thoughts ??

Though I have not been involved directly in any of the conversations, there are a LOT of messages here about ATA100 and W2K. The gist of what I've read is that W2K does NOT do ATA100 -- yet, at least not without patching. SP2 is supposed to fix that. You might want to do a search to see if this could be the crux of your problem. You may need to reconfigure the new drive or patch W2K.

In addition, I can tell you that Windows will look for both drives when you start up.

By the way, is the Quantum still the master drive? Since you mentioned that the hard drive was bundled with your Compaq, you might have a slow Quantum bigfoot drive. If both are true, your problem has been found.

Also, you could try disconnecting your old drive and test the results.

I wasn't aware of that Win2k had that ATA100 limitation, but what the hell.

I have a quantum fireball, not bigfoot. 72krpm,8.9seek time. It was running great when I purchased it, pre-2nd hdd days, but since I added the 40giger, it's been sluggish. Mind you I only had 128mb of ram when I purchased it but even an additional 128 doesn't make much difference. Guess 70GB is alot ot scan. blah..
