Hey Group,
I put together a system for a friend and everything seems to be ok, however, while in Windows the OS doesn't see the slave HDD but its recognized just fine in the systems bios and also in the windows control-panel/system/hardware/device manager

so how do I make WinXP see it??? Thanks for your help.

1) what version of Windows is it (XP, 2000, 98, or The Version We Do Not Name Aloud)?

2) what Service Pack level is the Windows at right now?

3) what is the capacity of the hard drive in GB

 
sorry for not posting all of the info but I was hoping that there was an easy quick fix.

XP (original release SP1)

primary master hdd = 160
primary slave hdd = 60

his system actually had them reversed so I told him that I would move them around and make the larger hdd the master.
 
Ok, well make sure to get SP2 installed and the Automagic Updates feature enabled for your friend. In Disk Management, what's showing there for the 60GB one? A screenshot would help, you can get free pic hosting at http://pics.bbzzdd.com if you need (good stuff).

Basically, if the drive shows but has no partition, right-click in the blank area to the right of Disk 1 (or whatever) and make a partition. If the partition's there, right-click it and assign it a drive letter. If there's no partition bar, right-click Disk 1 itself and see what your options are, maybe it needs imported or initialized.

it shows up and it says it has a partition and is healthy also it gives me the correct amount of hdd space and also the correct free space but still it doesn't show up in Windows.

I also moved the jumper all over the place and of course nothing, I then relocated it by putting it as a slave on the secondary IDE cable input and still nothing....freaking weird and now I am approaching burnout so thanks for your help guys I guess I look back here tomorrow.

In Disk Management's window, try right-clicking the white bar that represents the partition, and assign a drive letter to it. Any good? 😕
 
I believe I had this same problem recently. If setting a drive letter doesn't work, you might want to try setting the partition as active (right click on it)
