HDD formatting Issue

HDD worked fine as a secondary in a comp i havem its faster and bigger then the one teh OS is on so im doing a reinstall and installing Win 2K instead of Xp because teh Cele 700 doesnt like Xp so much

anyway im formatting from the Xp install CD and it gets to 50% just fine, takes the normal amount of time but then it starts to go in sper slow mode, 50-51% took about 30 min, so on and so forth, its currently at 60% and at this rate itll be done tomorrow

its a 40Gig maxtor HDd that has worked fine for years, and was fine as a data drive but now formatting it is just being slow as hell,

anyideas why? shoudl i just not bother formatting bdfore the install?

jumper is set correctly, all connections good
only thing i have not done is change out the IDE cable

would probably have been better just to format during install with win2k cd. Did you just reformat the partition or did you repartition too?

i AM formatting from the win2k install CD, boot from CD - choose install windows - format before install

im just formatting the whole 40 gig drive

ive done this many times before never had this issue

Seeing that it's a Maxtor and a couple years old at that,I'd have to assume the drive may be crapping out.Kinda small for XP also.If not then it's just a performace issue i.e. slow processor, memory,HD etc.
Just be patient.

if it was just being slow why woudl teh first 50% go at a normal formatting speed?
40gig isnt that small especially for server, i am being patient but its taking longer then it should

if it was dyeing shouldent the drive have showed these symptoms when i was ripping 20 gigs of data from it yesterday?

83% now

My guess is that it was formating fine until it found a bad sector, and the reason it didn't flake out when you were ripping data is probably because nothing critical was in those bad sectors. You might DL and run Maxtor's utility and see what it finds.

i gotta get it installed someplace first to do that dont i?
there no room in this comp 5 drives in it allready

or can i just load maxtors thing from a floppy? and actually its a Quantum HDD, back from when they were not the same company

You can boot and run it from a floppy without a problem but you first need to do some drilling at Maxtor's web page to find the right download. It isn't difficult. You will be asked for the drive model though.

DL it to the PC you are using now. Click the file and follow the instructions for creating a floppy disk, then move it to your sick PC and let it boot up from the new floppy. Run the check from there and see what it reports. 😉

*NOTE*

I see from your post above you are booting from the CD. Don't forget to change the boot order in the BIOS to floppy.

humm the program didnt even see any HDDs as attached, i downloaded teh right one for the Quantum Fireball Plus AS

guess its toast o well

But the computer sees the drive in the BIOS???? If so then it sounds like you got the wrong diagnostic tool. Either that or you got the right tool according to Maxtor but it won't see the Fireball drive. :frown:
