HDD Format too SLOW

Hi,

My PC (Windows XP) would not boot up today and when I tried to repair the OS it said that the OS was corrupted. So, I tried to reformat the HDD and reload everything. I have a 20GB HDD and it took almost 1 hour for the format to complete. After the initial files were copied and the PC restarted, it came up with an error message that a file was missing. Is my HDD shot? Thanks for any and all help.

hi,
try downloading the disk testing software from the manufacturer of your hard drive. they usually let you create a boot floppy/cd that does exhaustive testing of the disk. it will tell you if your disk has gone bad. but from what you describe, yes, it sounds like your hd has gone bad.
good luck

Are you overclocking? If your PCI bus is running out of spec it can cause HD corruption. Well, an unstable overclock can cause HD corruption no matter what.

Recommend you check the BIOS to see what it says and look for the processor speed and the cache settings and the DMA settings for the hard drive. Some newer motherboards revert back to safe standard settings when they overheat.
