I had to buy and install a survellance video recorder at my house, a Swann 4-channel unit. It came with a 500GB WD green drive, a 5000AUDX. While it's been working well so far, I'm wondering why they stuck a green drive in there when it is constantly writing to disk (mine is set to record 24/7.)

My question is... would it be better to replace it with a 'standard' HDD and use the green drive elsewhere; I have a 500GB Hitachi I have set aside for my HTPC build... I could fairly easily swap them out, or I'm willing to replace it entirely with a more suitable drive (RE4?) I'm not so familiar with green drives and their performance, this is my first one... does it hurt them or degrade their lifespan by having them write constantly?

They have put a green in because it's cheapest, but it's pretty poor they have done that. Reputable DVR manufactures use drives designed for 24/7 operation and constant writing. Western Digital offer two drives for these applications, the WD AV-GP or the WD AV-25. The RE4 would also work but is more of a general purpose enterprise drive and is likely to be more expensive.

Now that you told me what to look for.... I'm in luck!

The included WD AUDX drive is the AV-GP! ...I must have been looking at the incorrect drive on NE before.
