HDD failing?

So I recently replaced my mobo and formatted my system drive for a clean install of windows 7 x64. The drive is a 3.5 year old WD 250GB, now ever since then ive noticed the drive spiking to 100% useage fairly often and the pc just slows down to a crawl. Also using Hard Disk Sentinel its reporting that "Problems occurred between the communication of the disk and the host 16242 times." and its rising fairly quickly whereas I remember it being somewhere in the 3-4k range and not chaning prior to formatting.
Anyway is this a sign my drive is failing? or should I just reformat it again?
Ive been meaning to buy another drive anyway but I want to know if this is a serious problem or if I should just replace this drive and possibly only use it as a backup/file storage drive only and not as my system drive (unless this is a serious problem)
