I get this error everytime I try to bootup---this occurs in the startup (it detects the hdd just fine, but will not load into winxp, but rather comes up with the message "hdd error"

Has the hdd gone bad? It was working fine before... oh, yeah, 256mb ram, ecs k7s5a, 900mhz duron

Is this a bios, SMART, or Windows error? At best your hard drive is corrupted. Try booting from the Win CD and do a scandisk. If nothing is wrong, you may be able to do a system restore and if you can't, a reformat and reinstall is in order.

But, if errors are found on drive, repace it at once!

I have tried to do the recovery via the winxp bootup cd---which, simply resulted in it stalling. It won't create a new partition either (after deleting the previous ones). SMART error.
