okay so I got a IBM deskstar 60GXP:eek:...anyways here's the gist of it. Windows XP downgraded the DMA mode on my primary hard drive because of CRC errors i'm guessing. I tried to enable the DMA mode in device manager, but it's stuck in PIO mode everytime I reboot. I also tried the method posted here which changed the registry. And my computer is still in PIO mode. WinXP gods please advise me on what to do!!!

thanks =)

can only suggest you uninstall the relevant ide controller in device manager, reboot & hope the channel is redetected correctly by windows!

I am currently using a Soyo KT266A Dragon Plus
the IBM is on the primary IDE channel as master and has no slave devices

It will work fine to delete the offending IDE channel in Device Manager and then reboot. Windows P 'n P will find the "new" channel just fine. Then you will be able to (or it will already be) set your DMA to full speed.

Keep in mind, however, that this "feature" of XP's is telling you you have some sort of problem with your data flow (like a bad IDE cable or drive). You should keep you eye on your DMA setting and if this happens again you should investigate the cause.

First thing I'd do is try another cable. I've seen this happen twice and both times it was the IDE cable. They were rounded cables (one was a cheap, no-name 18", the other was one of those cool Vantec 18" silver-braided jobbies) and I replaced them with good old ribbon cables and all has been well since.
