I've decided to get two Maxtor Diamondmax plux 9 SATA for my new system and run them in Raid0, but I've heard that such a combination might result in a high HDD temperature, which is obviously something i would like the prevent.
Now the usual HDD Cooling racks and be somewhat expensive, especially when coming in pairs, and I would really like to get something cheaper. will a 80mm fan (directed at the HDD's) be enoghe to solve the heat problems ?

I personally like The Ultimate Hard Drive Cooler; that's a good price, compared to what it was half a year ago. I use it on my main HD without the fans, and even that does ok.

My secondary system has two 7200 rpm drives in it in RAID0; I initially just had them stuck together in the 3.5" internal bays - until I touched one while the case was open. Those things were really toasty, probably 140F or more. I got 3.5" -> 5.25" adapters, and put them in the 5.25" bays. I then traced out and cut a hole in the front bay plates (or whatever they're called), and mounted an 80mm fan in there - it blows cool air right over the hard drives. I don't have heatsinks on them right now; I don't know that they need it anyway with the fan right there. I've got that, and the extra fans in the system, all hooked to a Sunbeam fan controller, which I got that because my mom couldn't stand the sound of the fans at full blast. She's the kind that prefers the sounds of nature to the sound of a good, steady motor. I just never notice it.

My Two had drives are sitting in front of two intake fans inside my case. That would provide sufficient cooling for at least my needs.

The 80mm fan will do ya just fine, even at low voltages. Make sure the drives have room on the top and bottom to have air pass over.
