HDD and other problems

My friend has a comp in his office, which he uses just for typing. But today his hdd practicaly exploded. never mind that. The question is: if he buys 40 gb hdd 7.200, will it work on his soyo 6kbe lx with pentium 2 celeron 300 mhz????
