HD7970 GE (Ghz Edition) debut prices are well under the $499.99 MSRP.

VisionTek 900557 Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (1050mhz) - $450
SAPPHIRE Vapor-X Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (1050mhz) - $450
GIGABYTE Windforce 3X Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (1100mhz) - $470
XFX Double Dissipation Radeon HD 7970 GHz Edition (1050mhz) - $470

Performance with the latest drivers is very good, which means prices on the 670/680 might start to drop slowly.

Reference EVGA 02G-P4-2670-KR GeForce GTX 670 - $370 after gift card
Reference MSI N670GTX-PM2D2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 670 - $375 after rebate
ASUS Direct CUII GTX670-DC2-2GD5 - $400
MSI N670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC GeForce GTX 670 - $405 after rebate

Competition is great for the consumer.

Aug 7 Update :
- After-market 670s are back up to $400+ after shipping costs
- Vapor-X went up to $470 on Newegg. Superbiiz still has it for $452.99 with 3 Free games after coupon code TOPTECH. Even better deal than Newegg.

Personally, I wouldn't get a GE.
I'd either get a 7950, (and OC it to 1GHz+) or a 670, depending on what sort of rig I was building. (I wouldn't put a 1GHz 7950 in an HTPC)

Makes sense. Agreed for most folks. The MSI TF3 for $320 or that MSI 670 PE for $385 are looking great. However, I think the GE is worth it over the 680, not to mention NV is charging almost $600 for after market 4GB 680s! As a competitor to the 680, the GE is a great deal, especially at 2560x1440/1600 or 3 monitors. I feel like NV needs to drop 680 to $450 :)

TPU is using the latest drivers? Man, I'd better start going back to church — the world's about to end.
You must have some quality herb to even think those prices until Nvidia's next series is out.
It's still 5-6 months away. Definitely possible.

actually those prices seem very likely if sales slow down at all. heck that's only 20 bucks less than the 670 can be had for right now.

The 7970ge is faster than the gtx680 and has more vram attached to it for a lower price. Sure Nvidia's margins are probably way, way higher than AMD's, but sooner or later the price war that is finally starting is going to force significant price drops on Nvidia's current 600 series lineup.

I think the likelihood of Nvidia releasing GK110 as a Geforce product before the end of this year is increasing every day. It may be a very limited, December launch, but I still think it's going to happen.

The gtx480 and gtx470 tanked in price well before their replacements came out, and I think it's safe to say that nvidia is making way more money per GK104 in a $500 video card than they did with GF100 in a $500 video card.

That's going to be pretty funny if GK110 launched with 40-50% more performance for $500 by the end of the year, at the same time as rumours of Xbox 720 featuring HD6670-level of performance are popping up.....sad, sad indeed.

I think if GK110 launches this year a lot of people will forever deem this generation an expensive rip-off generation. I don't think it's going to happen though. Part of that is because NV will want to make as much $ as possible selling those GK110s as K20s. K20 is rumoured to launch by Q4 2012. So it's unlikely that NV will have even a single spare GK110 to sell to us for $500-600 when they can sell every single one of them for $3-5k.

Secondly, without competiton from AMD in the form of HD8000 series, NV can maintain high gross margins and have a competitive product line without dropping prices significantly. I know I went off-topic into financial zone but I don't think we'll see GK110 this year unless NV launches it at $800-1000 in small numbers. At $375-400, GTX670 is very competitive. Why cannibalize those profits with GK110? Also, NV probably saw AMD's roadmap that showed Sea Islands scheduled for 2013. We haven't even read a single rumour recently on GK110 coming to the PC. Usually it takes 3-4 months before those rumours start and materialize as product on the shelf, sometimes 6-9 months.

The most interesting thing I see is that the Sapphire doesn't have any mini DP. Considering AMD has championed mini DP, I find that strange. 1xDP (full size), 1xHDMI, 1xDVI single link, 1xDVI dual link. How's that going to effect Eyefinity?

Imho,

It's all about competition to me, which fuels innovation and value. Without it all one has left is strong defenders of premium pricing, with little value and innovation offered.

AMD and nVidia are the same to me -- about trying to obtain revenue and profit, maximize their competitive advantages if they have them.

The best thing to motivate AMD to drop prices of the HD 7970 and HD 7950 was nVidia.

The best thing to motivate nVidia to drop prices of the GTX 680 and GTX 670 is AMD.

Rather have nVidia and AMD bang heads -- instead of posters!:) With nVidia and AMD banging heads and competing strongly offers a win-win for consumers. My idealism is to have AMD and nVidia have 50/50 discrete share over-all and there was a time it actually happened. Both offering compelling choices and choose the product that best fits one subjective tastes, tolerances and wallet.

Why not? Plenty of good mITX and HTPC case/psu available these days. You could have an awesome gaming machine all in one.

Also, since many of us are not filthy rich beyond caring or completely irresponsible with money, value for $$ should always be a major factor. So the more they compete with each other, the better. I go with whichever company giving the best perf/$, and have been constantly bagging both the 7970 and 680 since launch about poor value. Even at $450 its still a rip off.

Essentially these pricing hasn't changed the natural order, get a 7950 if you like to OC, otherwise a 670 with its built in OC turbo.

You need to spend $25-27 on an Active Display-Port-to-Single-Link DVI adapter for 1080/1200P Eyefinity, or $100 for a Dual-Link adapter (linked below).

There have been several "Huh?" moments when AIBs start changing the reference design. MSI HD7970 Lightning doesn't support Dual-Link DVI despite having 2 DVI ports. Galaxy KFA2 GTX680 OC has ditched NV's reference recommendation (dual-link DVI-I, dual-link DVI-D, HDMI and DisplayPort) in favour of mini-display ports. That means neither the HD7970 Lightning nor the Galaxy KFA2 GTX680 OC can even drive certain monitors such as the 30in Dell monitor (the 3007WFP) because it will only function when attached to a graphics card with dual-link DVI.

A possible workaround would be to use an active-DisplayPort-to-dual-link-DVI adaptor, but they can fetch around $100 at retail. o_O

Actually for EyeFinity in general, you want an Active-DP to DVI adapter so very few 7970's will even work with Eyefinity without spending $25-27 for an adapter. Sapphire DX includes one for free in the bundle though.

I think the Geforce based top GK110 card is going to cost $599 - $649. And like I said, I don't think they will launch with any real volume, something around as low volume as the gxt690 launched with, but I have a gut feeling they're going to launch in December (assuming the chip is ready).

This is great news really. I see some prices like the MSI PE 670 have crept up a little, but still good.

The Tesla models will probably launch in December but I doubt a GK110 gaming card will launch this year when Nvidia doesn't even have their mid to low range out yet.
