HD7950 Crossfire Overheating

Setup:
Intel i5 3570k using ASUS Suite II @ ~4.2 GHz, stock cooler
ASUS P8Z77-V LK
MSI Twin Frozr Radeon HD 7950 3GB @ oc @ 900/1025
XFX Double D Radeon HD 7950 3GB @ stock @ 900/1025
8GB (2 x 4GB) G.Skill DDR3 PC 1600

When playing Witcher 2 or Crysis 3, in crossfire, the XFX 7950 is reaching +90C @ 99-100% fan speed while the MSI will reach ~83C maximum. Alone the XFX maxes out in the low/mid 80s. No problem either way with the MSI. I cleaned the dust and rewired my case, Cooler Master Cosmos 1000, to maximize airflow with no luck. I now have a box fan blowing in the side of the case and it is keeping temps down to mid 80s. Does anyone have experience with this?

Is this a matter of airflow? Will an aftermarket cooler help the XFX? Faulty card? Crappy BIOS? Liquid cooling?

XFX's are known for having a very poor cooling setup. Arguably the worst out there.

What case do you have? With open air coolers you need a lot of chassis airflow to get rid of the heat.

EDIT: See you have a Cosmos 1000

I went with a CM HAF 932 Advanced for that very reason. Great case for for cooling. The Cosmos 1000 is a great case for being quiet but running two 7950s will generate heat. I have my 670s in sli with the exhaust blowing out the back for this very reason.

I don't think the card is faulty, two open air cards in crossfire are going to overheat without direct airflow over them. You would be better off with reference cards.

Yeah I wasn't too sure which configuration to use; push, pull, push/pull. I figure I'll try all combinations to test the best results.
