HD6950 HDMI audio doesn't work - cable unplugged

I have just installed the new HD6950 with newest 10.12 driver under great difficulty with driver problems. It took me a while to fix the HDMI audio 'unable to start device' error. The message was fixed after disabling my motherboard HD audio device in BIOS, and several! restarts.

However, the ATI HDMI Output in Windows Sound setting is greyed out, listing Not plugged in. I have plugged in a HDMI1.4 cable supplied with my graphics card (Sapphire) to my AV receiver.
I would like to use HD6950 as a sound card to output HD audio. I know that the graphic card is incapable of driving all 3 HDMI+ DVI + DVI outputs due to having only 2 clocks, and it does not affect the display port. I have therefore plugged my primary monitor to DP, and unplugged my 2nd monitor for the moment. My HDMI is routed through my Onkyo TX-SR308 AV receiver back to my primary monitor, which accepts HDMI on top of DP. Reason for doing this is just trying to get audio working, I don't care about whether video comes out of the HDMI or not, since I use DP anyway.

However, the sound control panel refuse to acknowledge the cable and still reads 'Not Plugged In'. I am therefore unable to set ATI HDMI Audio Device as default playback device in Windows. I have also tried bypassing the AV receiver and using only the monitor for both video and audio (my monitor aupports HDMI 1.3spec PCM audio). Again the sound control panel still show cable not plugged in.

I am pretty sure if I am able to just set it as default device it would work. I don't know if this is stupidity of Windows or the Driver preventing me doing so.

Also, The 6 series as far as I know does not use the DVI-HDMI dongle, as it has dedicatd HDMI port. So numerous posts on this issue on the web regarding HD 2, 3, 4 series are out of date.

I am quite desperate and unhappy with this at the moment. I ditched my soundcard thinking the graphic card can handle as a sound card now.

Any hindsight is greatly appreciated.

Video definitely works

I have been reading a lot of posts on similar problems, none of the suggestions apply to me.
AMD support document on this is nonexistent or outdated.

Suggestions are mainly disable other sound devices, which I have done. Reinstall drivers, check. Make sure at least 1 DVI port is free, check.

I am sure cable is not the problem as it's supplied with the GPU.

I can't think of any other reasons unless the GPU is broken.

Another thing I notice is with this ATI High definition audio device, my computer start up time is dramatically longer (starting windows where windows logo is stays longer)

One other thing I can't really test is that I am using only PCI-E x4, as the extremely long 6950 (How are they going to make 6990 given 6950 is already huge) doesn't fit my motherboard where x16 slot is. I doubt this would affect the audio though, but I can't be certain of course.

Sigh...tech support over forums is so difficult. 🙂

Anyway, did you see this?

I know the adapter is not the problem but have you tried that unplugging, replugging the TV (with the TV on) like someone suggests in that thread? Also, your motherboard BIOS up-to-date and chipset drivers installed?

Also, in this thread it worked with one motherboard but didn't work on his Asus P5K-E Wifi
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1247479
That thread gives several suggestions to why it might not work with the P5K (including PCI-e limitations)...not sure how valid those are though.

Thanks very much for the info.
Since I am using the Asus P5K-E, at least I am not alone. This motherboard is a bit old so that isn't surprising, someone thinks P35 and it's its PCI-E support is at fault. I am looking to upgrade my PC after new CPUs come out next year anyway so I guess I would wait then.

If it's my graphic card at fault I will still have my warranty.

What are you using for audio? I thought the HDMI output was just a pass through. Also, how did you fit the card into an x4 slot?

Yeah I wish we could find some other links to show it is infact the P35 chipset causing the problem. I'm pretty sure the X4 slot on P35 runs off the southbridge instead of newer chipsets which run off the northbridge...maybe that has something to do with it. If you can, do run it off the x16 slot (can you take out the hard drives temporarily to test it?).

Anyway, if you haven't already, try the "ATI HDMI AUDIO" driver from here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads...evel=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false#High Definition Audio Codecs

If that doesn't work, sorry...I've run out of ideas.

It's not a pass-through on the newer AMD + nVidia cards.

This situation looks like ideas have been exhausted, the P35 issue sounds odd. I know I ran these cards fine on an older 965P board. Sounds frustrating.
