Hello chaps,

Specs:

Intel e8400 @3.8ghz
Asus P5Q-E
4GB DDR2 1066 OCZ Ram
MSI Radeon HD6950
Windows XP 32 bit (don't mention it, 7 is in the post lol).
Samsung 2233rz

Thanks for reading.

I've just moved from a 8800GTS G92 to a HD6950 and so far so good... but.... heres the thing.

I can run 120hz on the desktop res of 1680x1050 with no problems.

I can run Call of Duty 4 in game at 120hz on any resolution APART from 1680x1050.

For some reason the monitor/gpu in game at 1680x1050 forces itself to 60hz.

Whether its the gpu, monitor, software... I can't figure it out.

I've set 3d refresh override to 120hz, default, disabled. Fiddled around with the monitor (limited settings honestly), swapped config because I ran out of ideas too - still nothing.

120hz at every res APART from the supposed 'native' res. All after changing card. This was working fine with my old 8800gts g92.

I've installed the latest catalyst drivers and tried the MSI catalyst drivers that came with the card too, no luck :(

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Bob

I think the dual link dvi port can give you 120mhz at that resolution.
The top one.

Display Outputs
The AMD Radeon HD 6900 series feature five outputs, offering four display eyefinity with a maximum of two non-displayport connections (DVI/HDMI). There are two DVI ports, one dual link and one single link. The lower DVI port, closest to the PCB is the single link port that supports the use of DVI-VGA adapters, and a maximum resolution of 1920x1200 at 60Hz. The dual link DVI output supports displays up to 2560x1600 at 60Hz. A HDMI 1.4a port is also included, and the Sapphire bundle includes a HDMI 1.4 cable. Two mini DisplayPort outputs are located next to the HDMI output, supporting the 1.2 specification. The configuration provides Eyefinity support for up to 4 displays, at 1920x1200 resolution each, using any two digital outputs plus the two display port outputs. Eyefinity 6 is supported with the use of DisplayPort 1.2 displays that are daisy-chain capable, or multi-stream hubs. Unfortunately, neither are available for purchase yet.

Guys,

Thanks for the valuable input and so fast too.

Turns out after wrecking my brain for hours on end I just needed to install the Samsung 2233rz monitor driver from the samsung website.

Yes, I had no idea the monitor itself needed a driver.

Hopefully that helps anyone with the same set up as me.

Cheers,

Bob

Glad you found a solution. Let it be known that even though peripherals may work without drivers, most need their drivers for out-of-the-norm tasks. Hell, even mice nowadays need drivers.

You definitely need to get rid of the 32bit OS. With a 2Gb card you don't have much address space left for system RAM. ~1.25Gb

*confused*

Windows 7 64 bit is on its way in the post but does it mean my current 32bit XP OS is only using 1.25gb of my 4GB of ram? Just because of my HD6950's 2GB?

Anything I can do about this in the meantime? Or just sit tight?

@Bobh 89

as far as I know... Windows XP can use more than 4gb of (sytem) ram, and doesnt have any problems with your video card haveing 4gb of (V)ram.

*IF* it does (which I dont think it should), installing windows 7 will fix that issue (even though its probably not there).

You should definately install windows 7 though reguardless... so you have directx11 and can install the newest Internet Explorer.

***** Edit:

a 6950 only comes in 2gb versions and 1gb versions.... so no need to worry about a hypothetical 4gb video ram card.

Thanks Arkadrel.

This is reassuring.

Obviously as far as my knowledge goes I'm still on a 32bit OS so 3.25GB is my maximum at the moment.

I was just worried that until Win7 arrives I'm somehow stuck with only 1.25GB of usable memory.

It doesn't quite make sense anyway because my FPS performance gain has been considerable since the upgrade despite still being on a 32bit OS and a possible processor bottleneck.
