HD6450 passive GPU temps?

I've had a Diamond HD6450 GPU in my HTPC for over a year, I don't ever recall the temperatures getting very high on it (using Catalyst as a monitor now and then.) I downloaded the updated driver package from AMD last night... and now my GPU idles at 50C. ...and, to make matters worse, Catalyst keeps crashing.

I uninstalled everything, even used OCN's process to manually remove all the AMD/ATI files, and reinstalled drivers from the Diamond CD (v11.11 that came with the GPU and that have never given me problems,) but now Catalyst still crashes.

Anyone familiar with the Catalyst crashes?

Anyone running a passive HD6450 give me an idea of your temps? Something just doesn't seem right...

Currently running at 46-47C, according to GPU-Z. Flash video is probably the most strenuous workout it gets.

I have one of these in my HTPC I believe it hovers around 45-50c idle.

I have it in this case black version.

Case has good air flow so those temps seem normal to me.

Welllll... maybe that is normal. I just don't recall it being that high at idle.

Are either one of you running Catalyst, and have you updated your drivers lately?

I actually had to go in and recover an Acronis backup to the OS drive... it was that borked.

Funny you asked that I just RDP's home then rdp's to the htpc and it showing me a catalyst driver update to install. so i'm going to upgrade to the newest version of the drivers and will report back if there are any temp changes.

Maybe its heat spiking, pull the heatsink and remove that crappy thermal tape they use and use a nice thermal past.
Sometimes that tape is on wrong and works fine idle then at a curtain temp it spikes.
Found this out with mine.

Later I changed cases and had to hack the fins down to fit, Just decided to hack them down enough to put a small fan on it.

Running the newest cats on that machine and no difference in temp it idles at 45c which to me seems normal for a passive cooler on it.
