hd5870 performance issues

I have an ASUS hd5870, and it has been a great card for me for a few years now. Lately I have been noticing that the card will lose large amounts of performance randomly, and when I restart my PC it's back to normal.

It's not artifacting or anything like that. I will just randomly lose playable framerates and restarting fixes it until it happens again. Has anyone with a 5870 noticed this? I'm wondering if it's a driver issue that I'm unaware of that others experience?

I keep my drivers up to date, and run driver cleaner when installing new drivers.

Is it dusty-maybe its overheating if you've had it for years it needs a periodic good clean. Have you inadvertently downloaded a bit coin mining client?
Just a couple of ideas.

Have you monitored performance/temps with something like RivaTuner/Afterburner? What are the temps at the point you start to lose performance? Also check the memory usage (as james1701 mentioned).

It's pretty much any game I'm playing. I don't think I have any virus's. Temps seem fine also. It's like it goes into desktop clocks and doesn't come back out.

This maybe the problem. Try overvlocking it a little with afterburner to fix it at 3d clocks then test in game. If possible post a screenshot of afterburner log showing clocks and gpu usage after a game session.
