HD5870 getting gray/screen when playing games

I have a XFX HD5870 on a dual monitor setup, but when I play games, it sometimes display gray screen on one screen and purple/green other random colors on the other. _Seems_ like a ATI Driver crash, since if I wait it out, it'll return to the game/desktop and start rendering again. This is happening mainly in Crysis and sometimes Bad Company 2. Tried Bioshock 2 and a few others, but haven't experienced it yet.

So I am wondering, is this a ATI Driver issue or do I have a faulty card? -- I also checked the temps while running, At max while running Furmark was around 74C -- What's the safe operating range of HD58xx series?

My 5770 has gotten to 82 C and the fan only went to 60%, so 74 C should be fine. Use GPU-Z to get a log when running something like Crysis if you're worried.

Grey screen is hit and miss. The rumour is that it may be a hardware issue that they're "diguising" with software (driver) updates. I've only had the grey screen and "driver stopped responding" crashes on the desktop; once was loading Metro 2033, it crashed while playing the splash/logo screens. People have tried RMAing with and without success, drivers seem to help, so I'll wait for a few more updates. I have an XFX so I'm not worried too much. Lifetime warranty, yay.

Try the 10.3a drivers.

Actually, I downgraded from 10.3a -- I started getting more gray screen after I went from 10.2. Where 10.2 didn't gave me any gray screen from Bad Company 2, and 10.3a did. I guess I will stick with it for now. But Crysis gives gray screen for both 10.2 and 10.3a.. Odd.

Honestly, I wouldn't bother fixing anything when something doesn't work out of the box. You may be able to fix it and it will be fine forever but it could come back some time in the future and then you're screwed.
RMA.

Out of curiosity, is your XFX one of the factory overclocked ones? I've seen a bit of complaints about the overclocks supposedly causing problems, but whether these claims are true, I'm not sure. I have a XFX HD5870 (no overclock) and I've never had a gray screen.

Yep, I got a HD5870 XXX Edition -- 875/1300 out of box. I contacted XFX and they sent me a BIOS that changed the clocks to 900/1250. Seems like the memory was the limiter? So far I'm not seeing gray screens now, but with Crysis, it still pops up now and again.
