HD4870 Blue Screens Win 7

Trying to figure out why my older machine is giving my trouble. It uses a pair of older HD4870 graphics cards which are now considered legacy adapters. Both cards are identical and I have been using them in CFX for a long time, without too many snags.

Any 3D application causes a blue screen and they always mention the atikmdag.sys as the culprit. I updated from drivers 12.6 i believe to 13.1 and the problem persists. I'm not really sure why all of a sudden I am having issues but I think I may need to retire them.

I would appreciate any advice or suggestions on what to try. I can't think of anything else...

OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and a ASUS Rampage formula mobo. Power supply is a 650w Corsair.

it's funny you ask that because it was not two months ago I dismantled and reseated both cards and made sure the fins were dust free. these guys are the reference design and have always run hot hot, so it wouldn't surprise me if one or both have just reached their end of life. i think i bought them in late 2008 so they've had a good run...

i disabled crossfire and got the same result but i'll keep tinkering and if i can't figure it out it looks like two more cards for me "once great adapters" stash haha
