HD4850 + L4D2 + 4xAA = 30FPS or less?!

Maybe L4D2 is just that much more intense than L4D 1 but the computer in my sig struggles to run 30+ FPS with everything high 4xAA enabled in the game. L4D1 gave me solid 60+ FPS with the same settings.

If I turn AA off, I can easily do 100+ FPS.

Anyone else surprised by how taxing L4D2 could be or is my computer not pulling its share?

I have the same card, and I can't play L4D2 with 4xAA. I don't think my average frame rate is below 30, but definitely in action intense scenes. Turning AA off while leaving everything else on max makes my frame rate a lot smoother (60+). Screen resolution by the way, is 1920x1080.

Doesn't seem out of line. 4850 isn't slow, but it's not that fast either. It's not the type of card you want to max out recent games with AA with.

L4D2 has some updated graphics so the FPS is a tad lower across the board. Still, my friend is playing L4D2 with a 4850 1GB card with good frame rates at 4x AA. He is also gaming at 16x10.

I think what is hurting you is the 512MB version of the 4850 that you have.

Agreed that it's probably the 512MB of VRAM holding you back.
I had sudden slow downs in DA when I maxed everything even though normally it ran just fine on my 4850 512.
With my 5770 1 GB I no longer have that problem.

I dunno about you guys but I'm running an 8800GT 512mb on 1920x1200 with 4xAA, 4X AF, Triple Buffering, VSync On, and all other settings on High. It runs smoothly for me. Perhaps you need to run driver clean and reinstall using latest drivers? 512mb is adequate for 1920x1200 with quality settings turned up at a reasonable level, so I really don't see how a 4850 is having problems; considering that it's a little better than an 8800gt.

Smooth to one person isn't smooth to someone else. It's impossible you're getting 60+fps all the time so no, your game isn't smooth to everyone.

my 4890 runs it at 60FPS and never dips, Vsync is on. I run it at 1080P max settings, 4xAA. So 30FPS for a 4850 does seems a little low.

I'm using 10.3's. For some reason this computer (back when it had a 7300 too) never really felt all that fast and peppy. I'd always score on the low side of any bench curve and so on. I've always felt it was the P43 dicking things up for me but I could never be sure.

Anyhow, next chance I get I'll do a proper (DC and the whole bit) install of the 10.4's and see if that makes a difference, though I doubt it.

Also tempted to look for good deals on a P45, although that'd just be a waste of money at this point.
