HD4850: Do I need to upgrade it for COD: MW2?

I currently have a HD4850 coupled to a Intel Q9300 clocked 3.1GHz. This is for gaming on my 42 inch LCD at 1080p. I was just wondering if this game warrents upgrading to the new HD5800 series coming out?

Uh, seems like you're playing at a really high res, so an upgrade to a 5870 would def be worthwhile. Go for it.

But yeah, lol @ CoD : MW2.

Well you don't NEED to but if you want to then 5850 or 5870 are good choices depending on your budget.

It's going to have lower hardware requirements then MW 1 - same engine with a few tweaks, but max players is limited to 18 not 64.

MW2 will run the same as MW1 and CoD WaW so no. Even at that res, a 4850 is not going to go below 60FPS. If you were running at 2560x1600 then different story.

What about me? I've got a 512MB X1800XT from about 3.5 years ago, shown in my sig. I only game at 1024 x 768, but will be upgrading to a 1920 x 1080, soon.

Do I need a video card upgrade to handle the game? If so, what would you recommend for under $100?

Also, why is everyone in this thread hating on MW2? Looks like a great game, from what I've seen.

Normally I would say a 4850 should run that just fine but since they have decided to omit the dedicated server code I am 99 percent certain that the game will suck no matter what video card you run it with.

I'm gonna have to go with the crowd here. No dedicated servers means what makes PC games fun is going to go bye bye. But, you shouldn't need a vid card upgrade. I myself have a 4870, and I could run MW with 24xAA at 1440x900, with no problems.

From that link:
Moriarte: Ignoring IW.net, is the PC version a direct port of the console version?

Mackey-IW: No, PC has custom stuff like mouse control, text chat in game, and graphics settings.

LOL :D

Sounds to me like it will be as bad as halo2 PC. I wonder if the ingame tips will still talk about the xbox controller. lol.

The graphics don't look like anything special, and +1,000,000 on the no dedicated server sucking. They can try as they may to turn pc gaming into the scam that console gaming is, but they wont succeed.

If you want maximum settings at 1080p a bit better card can't hurt. I have a 4870 and at times in CoD4 and especially CodWaW it dips into the upper 40's or low 50's. It's not unplayable or noticeable unless you have drawfps enabled. But it's better with my 4890, I suspect a 5850 would be overkill. But the more the merrier hehe.

i played the cod4 without mods and still enjoyed it, in fact played it twice through loved that game. but I can understand if people playing on their own servers with mods and custom maps running will be angry to loose all that flexibility. I honest not sure why IWard would do a thing like that since the custom mods not only gave creative outlet to fans it also extends the game.

as for the new one I will wait a bit, not only for the price to drop but also see how the reviews are. if IW made it crappy I wouldn't buy it. My time is worth more.

Stick with the 4850 because:

A) The 5850 is very hard to acquire now... (and don't even think about getting a 5870, I'm still trying to get my replacement and don't need someone else going for them too.)

B) The 4850 is still a solid card and can handle 1920x1080 quite well.

C) Don't buy CoD:MW2 ... at least not right away. Hold off till they either change their minds on the dedicated server thing or they prove that it's unneeded. Track record says that it's not going to work, but if they prove me wrong I will buy it.

4850 should be okay but I agree with the others to wait and see.
The game is coming out in a few days time, no need to jump the gun on a GPU yet. :D
